Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

How do I stop birds from picking at the garbage in my open-top urban trash bin?

It's a common urban headache: you step outside to find a flock of birds has turned your open-top trash bin into an all-you-can-eat buffet, scattering garbage everywhere. Don't worry, you can solve this problem humanely and effectively. The most straightforward solution is to eliminate their access. If possible, switch to a bin with a secure, locking lid. If you're stuck with an open-top model, a simple bungee cord stretched tightly across the top can work wonders. For a DIY approach, cut a piece of chicken wire to size and secure it over the bin with heavy-duty clips. Birds are also deterred by unexpected movement and reflections. Hang old CDs, reflective tape, or pinwheels near the bin. The flashing light and movement will make them uneasy. Another excellent tactic is to use their sense of smell against them. Birds dislike the smell of peppermint and chili peppers. Soak several cotton balls in peppermint oil and place them in a mesh bag on top of your trash, or sprinkle cayenne pepper around the bin's rim (reapply after rain). Finally, consider your trash schedule. If possible, avoid putting food scraps out overnight or long before pickup. Taking out the trash closer to collection time gives birds less opportunity to feast. With these simple strategies, you can reclaim your bin and maintain a cleaner, more peaceful urban environment.
