Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

What's the best way to mount an outdoor trash can to a concrete surface?

That's an excellent question! A securely mounted trash can is a game-changer—it stops pests from knocking it over, prevents it from blowing away in the wind, and just looks tidier. Mounting one to concrete might seem daunting, but with the right method, it's a very straightforward DIY project. The best and most reliable way is to use concrete screws or anchors.

Here is a step-by-step guide for a permanent, secure installation:

What You'll Need:

* A hammer drill (a regular drill often won't be powerful enough for concrete)

* A masonry drill bit the correct size for your anchors or screws

* Concrete screws (like Tapcon screws) or concrete anchors with lag shields

* A wrench or socket set

* Safety glasses and a dust mask

* The trash can bracket or a set of mounting brackets

The Step-by-Step Process:

1. Choose the Location and Mark Your Holes: Place your trash can where you want it. Hold the mounting bracket firmly against the concrete surface. Using a pencil or marker, clearly mark the spots where you need to drill through the holes in the bracket.

2. Drill the Pilot Holes: Put on your safety glasses and dust mask. Insert the correct masonry bit into your hammer drill. Drill straight down into the concrete at each of your marked spots. The hole depth should be slightly deeper than the length of your concrete screw or anchor.

3. Clear the Dust: This is a critical step for a strong hold! Blow into the holes or use a vacuum to remove all the concrete dust. Any dust left inside will prevent the anchor from seating properly.

4. Attach the Bracket: Line up your bracket with the freshly drilled holes. If using concrete screws, you can often drive them directly through the bracket and into the concrete. If using sleeve anchors, insert the anchor into the hole first, then place the bracket over it and tighten the nut with a wrench. Tighten everything firmly, but don't over-tighten and strip the threads.

5. Secure the Trash Can: Once the bracket is firmly attached to the concrete, simply place your trash can into it or secure the can to the bracket according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Alternative for a Non-Permanent Solution:

If you don't want to drill, a heavy-duty construction adhesive (like Liquid Nails) can be used to glue a metal bracket to the concrete. While this avoids drilling, it is generally not as strong or reliable long-term, especially for a heavy or frequently moved trash can.

By following these steps with concrete screws, you'll have a trash can that is securely mounted, pest-proof, and able to withstand the elements for years to come. Happy installing
