Keeping your outdoor space clean starts with a well-fitting liner in your trash bin. A bag that slips down or tears can create a mess and attract pests. So, how do you make sure your liners fit properly? It's easier than you think.
First, know your bin's dimensions. Grab a tape measure and check the height, width, and depth of the inside of your trash can. Don't just guess! Jot these numbers down. When you're shopping for liners, compare your bin's measurements to the bag's stated capacity or dimensions on the package. The liner should be slightly taller and wider than your bin to allow for a secure cuff over the rim.
Next, don't just drop the liner in. To get a snug fit, fully open the bag and lower it into the bin, making sure it settles into the bottom corners. Then, pull the top of the bag over the rim of the bin, creating a cuff of at least a few inches. This extra material is crucial—it helps hold the bag in place, especially when the wind blows or as the bin fills up.
If you find your liners are still a bit loose, try a simple trick. Before placing the liner, put a heavier item, like an old newspaper or a small, flat rock, in the very bottom of the empty bin. This adds a little weight to anchor the bag and prevent it from shifting.
Finally, don't overfill the bin. Once the bag is full, tie it up securely. Overstuffing puts stress on the liner and increases the chance of a tear when you try to remove it. By taking a few moments to measure correctly and secure the bag, you can ensure a perfect fit, making trash duty a much cleaner and simpler task.
