Yes, they can—and it’s usually the sugary residue rather than the trash can itself. If a cup still has soda, juice, sweet tea, or syrup in it, the smell and easy sugar source can pull in yellowjackets, paper wasps, and honeybees, especially in late summer when natural food is scarcer. The bin becomes a feeding station if cups are left open or leaking. Bees are often after the sugar too, though they’re usually more focused on flowers unless a sweet drink is easy to reach. To reduce the problem, empty and rinse cups before tossing them if you can, keep public bins covered and emptied often, clean up spills around the bin, and don’t leave half-finished drinks on benches or ledges. A well-sealed, frequently serviced bin with a flap or lid won’t attract nearly as many as an open can full of sticky cups.
