Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

How do you keep animals out of urban trash cans?

Honestly, the goal is to make your trash can as uninteresting as possible. Animals come for food and shelter, so if you remove the smell, block easy access, and make the bin feel unstable or surprising, most urban wildlife will move on. Start with a can that has a tight-fitting, locking lid. A plain lid is easy for raccoons to flip; add a metal latch, a heavy-duty bungee cord, or a commercial raccoon strap. If you live somewhere with bears or very determined raccoons, invest in a bear-resistant container. Put all food waste in sturdy bags, and double-bag especially smelly scraps. Keep the bin out of reach if possible, and bring it to the curb on collection morning rather than the night before. Clean the can regularly with soap and water, then spray it with vinegar or a pet-safe enzyme cleaner to cut odor. Don’t pour bleach or ammonia around it; strong chemicals can hurt pets and wildlife and don’t fix the underlying attraction. Keep the area around the bin tidy: pick up fallen fruit, pet food, and birdseed. Secure compost bins too, because they are often easier to raid. A motion-activated light, a sturdy fence, or a motion-activated sprinkler can help, but change things up so animals don’t get used to one deterrent. Store pet food indoors and never leave leftovers outside. Talk to neighbors, because one careless trash can on the block can keep raccoons and rats coming back. And please don’t feed wildlife intentionally; it makes them bolder and more dependent on people. If a can is tipped over, clean the mess right away and check for gaps under sheds or decks where animals might be living. If you have a persistent problem, contact local animal control or a wildlife professional instead of using poison or traps that can harm pets or other animals. The basic routine is simple: lock the lid, reduce the smell, limit access, and keep the area clean. Do that consistently, and your trash can will stop looking like a free buffet.
