Honestly, the trick is to make your trash can boring and hard to open. I’d start by upgrading the lid setup: a can with a locking handle is ideal, but if you already have a standard bin, use a tight-fitting lid plus a bungee cord or two across the top. For raccoons and cats, a simple strap can be enough to frustrate them; for rats, focus more on eliminating access and smell. Keep the can clean, rinse recyclables, double-bag food waste, and freeze smelly scraps until trash day if possible. Don’t put pet food, meat bones, or oily food containers in an outdoor can if you can avoid it.
Timing matters, too. In many cities, it’s better to put trash out the morning of pickup rather than the night before. If you must set it out at night, bring it in as soon as you can the next morning. Animals learn routines fast, so consistency helps. A motion-activated light or sprinkler can startle raccoons and cats, but don’t rely on it alone. Also check for easy routes: overturned cans, open compost, bird feeders, pet bowls, and fruit trees can all draw animals toward your trash area.
For smell control, sprinkle baking soda in the bottom of the bin, keep the lid closed, and wash the can every few weeks with soap and water. If rats are the issue, look for holes or gaps, and ask your city about rodent-resistant carts. If bears are possible in your area, do not use ammonia or other home remedies as a substitute for a bear-resistant can—call your local waste department and follow their rules. In shared buildings, get neighbors on board, because one loose bag can undo everyone’s efforts. The goal isn’t to scare animals away for one night; it’s to remove the food smell and easy access that keep them coming back.
