Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

What size urban trash cans do you recommend for a busy city sidewalk?

For a busy city sidewalk, I’d generally recommend a 45–55 gallon trash can as the sweet spot. That size handles a lot of foot traffic without becoming so heavy that collection crews hate emptying it. If the sidewalk is truly high-traffic—near a transit stop, food carts, or a major intersection—lean toward 50–55 gallons. If traffic is busy but not constant, a 32–40 gallon can may be easier to manage and service. Look for a sturdy commercial bin with a wide 8–12 inch opening, a secure lid, and a consistent liner size. I’d also keep the height around 36–42 inches and the diameter around 24–28 inches so it’s visible and easy to use without blocking the walkway. The best choice is really the smallest size that won’t overflow between collection times, because oversized cans can get too heavy, smell worse, and become harder to clean. Pair the right size with frequent collection, and your sidewalk will stay cleaner and more manageable.
