Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

Do urban trash bins need concrete pads underneath them?

Not always, but often it’s a good idea. In a lot of cities, you’ll see public bins set on concrete pads because the pad gives the bin a stable, level base. That matters when the bin is heavy, gets serviced often, or sits on soft ground, because otherwise it can sink, lean, or crack the pavement around it. A concrete pad also makes cleaning easier, helps keep water from pooling, and can reduce rust and pest problems by keeping the bottom of the bin drier and more accessible. For a small residential-style bin on a solid sidewalk or asphalt, though, a pad may not be required. It really depends on local rules, the bin type, and how much traffic it gets. If you’re installing a public bin, I’d check with the local public works department or waste hauler, and follow any accessibility and drainage requirements. If the ground is uneven or soft, or the bin is large and used daily, a concrete pad is usually worth it.
