Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

How do I train new sanitation workers on emptying specialty urban trash cans?

I’d train them in a short, practical sequence rather than just handing them a route sheet. First, I walk them through the specific can types on their route—locked bins, compactors, divided recycling or organic units, foot-pedal lids, or RFID-tagged cans—and review the manufacturer instructions and local safety rules. Then we do a hazard check: traffic, sharp items, biohazards, overweight lids, and any lock or release mechanism. I issue and fit the right PPE, including gloves, a high-visibility vest, and cut-resistant gloves where needed. Next, I demonstrate the full emptying cycle at normal pace: approach, unlock or release, check for obstructions, lift or tilt safely, empty completely, replace the liner if required, relock, and clean up drips or debris. I explain why each step matters and what not to force. After that, the new worker practices while I coach—first with an empty can, then with a typical load, then on the trickiest can on the route. I use a buddy system for the first few shifts and give immediate feedback. At the end, they complete a short competency check: identify the can type, complete the emptying sequence, handle a simulated jam or spill, and explain the reporting process. I also document the training and check in after a week. The goal is safe, consistent emptying without damage to the can, the worker, or the collection equipment.
