Yes—they’re more common than you might think. A lot of cities use combination street furniture where a trash can is built into a bench, or a planter-and-bin unit sits on the sidewalk. Some are designed with seating and planters as one unit, and you’ll also see smart waste bins with a small seating ledge or advertising panel, especially at bus stops and plazas. The idea is to save space, make streets more comfortable, and keep litter contained without adding clutter. The trade-offs are maintenance and hygiene: public bins need to be emptied often, the seating has to stay clean, and the design has to be sturdy and accessible. So they exist, but good ones are planned as street furniture, not just a bin with a board bolted on.
Are there urban trash cans that double as seating or planters?
