Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

For a new development, how many public waste bins per block would you recommend?

When planning a new development, the question of how many public waste bins to place per block is more nuanced than a one-size-fits-all number. From my experience working on urban and suburban projects, I always start by considering foot traffic, land use, and maintenance capacity.

For a standard mixed-use block (roughly 200–300 feet long) with moderate pedestrian activity, I recommend 2 to 4 bins per block. Here’s why: you want a bin at each major intersection or transit stop, and at least one in the middle of the block if there are benches, retail entrances, or high footfall zones. If your block has heavy foot traffic—like a commercial corridor with cafes, shops, and offices—lean toward 4 to 6 bins to prevent overflow littering. For low-density residential blocks, 1 to 2 bins per block often suffices, placed near corners or parklets.

But numbers alone aren’t enough. You need to pair placement with bin design. I recommend using 30–40 gallon capacity bins with lids that prevent windblown litter and animal access. Also, plan for a servicing frequency that matches the block’s waste generation—daily for high-traffic areas, every other day for moderate zones.

One mistake I see is over-bin placement, which clutters sidewalks and encourages improper waste disposal. Instead, think strategically: locate bins within 50 steps of any public bench, crosswalk, or bus stop. This creates a “convenience radius” that reduces litter without dominating the streetscape.

In short, for a new development, start with a baseline of 2 to 4 bins per block, then adjust up or down based on pedestrian counts, land use mix, and local waste collection schedules. Test the layout with a pilot block during the first month, then refine. This balance keeps your streets clean, your residents happy, and your maintenance costs predictable.
