Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

How do I make sure the waste bin I choose is easy for collection crews to service?

Choosing the right waste bin isn’t just about how it looks in your driveway—it’s about making the weekly pickup smooth and safe for the collection crew. I’ve learned a few practical things over the years that really matter.

First, think about size and weight. A 95-gallon bin might hold a lot, but if you stuff it with wet grass or heavy debris, even a strong crew member will struggle. Stick to standard sizes (like 32, 64, or 95 gallons) that are commonly used in your area. Avoid overfilling it beyond the rim—crew members shouldn’t have to push down your trash or risk spills.

Next, check the handles. Look for a bin with a large, ergonomic bar handle, not just small finger holes. Crew members use these to tilt and lift the bin onto the truck. A comfortable grip reduces strain and speeds up the process. Also, make sure the wheels are in good shape—cracked or wobbly wheels make the bin hard to roll to the curb, and that’s extra work for everyone.

Don’t forget the lid. A lid that is hinged and stays open on its own makes it easier for the crew to dump the bin without having to hold it up with one hand. Avoid bins with lids that are too tight or require a lot of force to open. Some bins also have a side latch that keeps the lid closed but is easy for the crew to release.

Finally, placement matters. On collection day, place your bin at the curb with the handle facing your house (not the street) and the wheels slightly away from the curb. This way, the crew can easily grab the handle and tilt it toward the truck. Leave about three feet of space on each side so the truck arm or the crew member can maneuver without obstacles.

If you want to go the extra mile, ask your local waste service what bin models they recommend. Many cities have specific brands or designs that their trucks are built to handle. Following those guidelines almost guarantees a hassle-free experience for everyone.

In short: keep it standard, not stuffed, with good handles and a friendly lid. Place it thoughtfully. That’s how you make sure the crew can do their job quickly and safely, and that means fewer missed pickups and fewer broken bins.
