Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

Are the liners for this waste bin a standard size I can buy anywhere?

That’s a really good question, and one a lot of people run into when they first pick up a bin from a store or online. I’ll try to give you a natural, honest answer.

First, the short version: in many cases, yes, the liners for most common household waste bins are fairly standard sizes that you can pick up at any grocery store, big-box retailer, or even online. But there are definitely some exceptions, so it pays to double-check.

Most standard 13-gallon kitchen trash bins, for example, use liners that are roughly 24 inches by 30 inches. Those are everywhere – you can buy them in bulk at Costco, under the Glad or Hefty brand at Target, or even store-brand versions at Walmart. Similarly, smaller bathroom bins (often 4 to 8 gallons) typically use 10-gallon or 8-gallon liners. Desk wastebaskets usually take 4-gallon bags. So in those cases, you can absolutely buy them anywhere.

However, here’s where it gets tricky: if your bin is a unique shape, like a slim rectangular step can, or a kitchen bin with a very specific height or width, you might need to check the manufacturer’s specifications. Some modern designs are slightly taller or narrower than the old-school standard. In that case, the “standard” 13-gallon bag might slip down too low, or the drawstrings might not reach the rim. I once had a high-end stainless steel bin where I had to buy specific replacement liners from the brand’s website, because generic ones just didn’t stay in place.

A quick way to tell: measure the bin’s height and circumference (or the length of the open top). Most bag packaging lists the bin capacity it fits (e.g., “fits 10-13 gallon trash cans”). If your bin falls within that range, you’re almost always safe. Also, if you have a rectangular bin, look for “tall kitchen” bags rather “small” ones – they’re about 13 gallons but slightly narrower in width for slim cans.

So to summarize: if you have a typical kitchen, bathroom, or office bin, yes, you can find liners nearly everywhere. But if your bin is a fancy designer model or an oddly shaped one, you might need to check the manual or contact the manufacturer. Hope that helps you avoid a few extra trips to the store!
