Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

How do I secure a freestanding urban trash can so it doesn't get stolen?

If you’ve ever had a freestanding trash can vanish from your alley or patio, you know how annoying it is. The good news is, securing one isn’t rocket science. Here’s what I’ve found works best.

First, think about the base. A freestanding can is easy to carry off if it’s light. Your best bet is to anchor it. You can buy a concrete anchor kit from a hardware store—basically an L-bracket that you bolt into the ground or into a heavy concrete block. Another option is to drill a hole through the bottom of the can and use a heavy-duty chain or cable lock to attach it to a fence post, a bike rack, or even a cemented-in eye bolt. I’ve done this with a thick, weather-resistant cable and a padlock, and it’s never failed me.

Second, consider a locking lid. Thieves often target cans that are easy to open and dump out. But a locking lid also makes the whole unit harder to carry. You can find retrofit locks that clamp onto the handles or hinge mechanisms. Some people also install a simple padlock hasp on the side of the can, which prevents the lid from being lifted off.

If you live in a high-traffic area, visual deterrence helps. Paint your can with an unusual pattern or stencil your address on it in large letters. This makes it less attractive to resell and easier to identify. You can also put reflective tape on the sides—it tells potential thieves that the can is being monitored.

Finally, for a cheap and fast solution, fill the bottom of the can with a few concrete blocks or heavy sandbags before you put in your trash liner. This adds enough weight that someone would need a truck to move it. Just make sure the extra weight doesn’t trip up the garbage collectors. Some people even bolt their can directly to a small wooden pallet, which is heavy and awkward to steal.

In short: anchor it down, lock it up, and mark it visibly. With these steps, you’ll make your freestanding trash can far more trouble than it’s worth for any thief.
