Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

Is a round or square waste bin better for maximizing corner space?

When it comes to fitting a waste bin into a corner, I’ve actually spent quite a bit of time thinking about this myself. I used to have a square bin tucked into a kitchen corner, and while it looked neat, I quickly noticed that the corners of the bin itself would get clogged with crumbs and dust, and it was a pain to clean. That’s when I switched to a round bin, and honestly, it made a big difference in how the space felt.

Let me break it down simply. Square bins are great for fitting flush against two walls, which means they can look very tidy and use up the entire corner footprint. But here’s the catch: most corners don’t have a perfect 90-degree angle behind them, and a square bin can leave awkward gaps or stick out more than you’d like. Also, because the shape has edges, it can block easy access to other items stored nearby, like cleaning supplies.

On the other hand, round bins are surprisingly good for corners. Their curved shape means they don’t need to align perfectly with the walls, so they slide into tighter spots more naturally. They also leave a bit of breathing room around the sides, which makes it easier to reach into cabinets or drawers next to the bin. For cleaning, a round bin is much simpler—no trapped dirt in corners. Plus, they usually hold more waste relative to their footprint because the shape allows for a wider opening.

But here’s my honest opinion after using both: if your corner is very tight and narrow, a slim rectangular bin (like a tall narrow one) is actually better than either a perfect square or a round bin. But for standard corners that are just open floor space, a round bin wins for maximizing usable space and convenience. It’s less fussy, easier to clean, and fits into corners without that “stuck in a box” feeling.

So if you’re trying to decide, I’d say go for a round bin unless you have a very specific corner depth that matches a square bin perfectly. Your future self will thank you for the easier cleaning and the extra wiggle room.
