Plastic is much quieter, which means fewer distractions in class nearby.
One downside? Plastic can eventually become brittle in extreme cold, but if you’re in a moderate climate, that’s rarely an issue. Metal can also be recycled more easily at end-of-life, but plastic bins often last longer in service, reducing replacement costs.
Ultimately, for a school playground, I’d pick a sturdy, UV-resistant plastic trash can with a secure lid and a smooth, rounded design. It’s safer, quieter, and lower-maintenance. If the budget allows, look for one with a weighted base or anchors so it can’t be tipped over easily. That’s the real winner in my book.
