And for the truly stubborn smells, some urban designs include automatic misting or deodorizing systems. These bins release a fine mist of water or an enzyme-based liquid every time the lid is closed, neutralizing odors instantly. These are more common in high-traffic tourist areas near markets or food streets.

They’re not perfect—maintenance and cost are challenges—but with features like passive ventilation, charcoal filters, solar compaction, and microbial coatings, they make a real difference.
