Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

For a high-traffic area, should I get several small waste bins or a few large ones?

That's an excellent and very practical question. For a high-traffic area like a lobby, airport terminal, busy office corridor, or public park, the instinct is often to place many small bins, thinking it makes disposal more convenient. However, from a facilities management perspective, opting for fewer, but larger capacity bins is usually the more effective and efficient strategy. Here’s why.

First, consider capacity and overflow. A cluster of small bins fills up incredibly fast in a busy spot. This leads to overflow, littering around the bins, increased odors, and a generally untidy appearance that requires constant monitoring. One large bin can hold the equivalent waste of 4-5 small ones, significantly reducing the risk of overflow between collection cycles.

Second, think about maintenance labor and cost. More bins mean more stops for your cleaning staff. They must check, empty, and reline each one individually. Consolidating into fewer large bins streamlines this process, freeing up staff time for other tasks and reducing liner costs. It's simply more operationally efficient.

Third, placement is about psychology and visibility. In a vast space, numerous small bins can look cluttered and get lost visually. A few strategically placed, large bins at natural choke points (e.g., near exits, elevators, food courts) are easier for people to spot and remember. Their prominent size acts as a visual cue to dispose of waste properly.

Of course, there are nuances. In a food court, you might pair a large general waste bin with a large recycling station. The key is to use large-capacity units but ensure they are aesthetically designed and emptied on a proactive schedule to prevent the single point of failure from becoming a major issue. Ultimately, for managing waste in high-traffic zones, the goal is maximum capacity with minimal collection points. Therefore, investing in a few robust, large bins will typically serve you better than scattering many small ones.
