Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

What's the best way to secure a liner inside a tall, narrow urban trash can?

Ah, the classic tall kitchen bin struggle! You drop in a fresh liner, and it immediately slumps down or disappears into the depths. For a tall, narrow urban trash can, the key is creating friction and support. Here's what works best in my experience.

First, ensure the liner is the right size. A bag that's too small will always slip. Opt for bags labeled for tall or extra-tall bins. Before placing it, give the bag a little stretch and fluff it with air to open it fully.

The most effective trick is to use the bin's own rim. After placing the liner, fold the top edge of the bag *outward* over the rim of the can, creating a generous cuff—about 3 to 4 inches. Then, take a simple rubber band or two and loop it around the cuff, securing it to the outside of the rim. This creates excellent grip and prevents the entire bag from sliding down.

For a cleaner look, use binder clips. Fold the bag's edge over the rim and clip it in place at several points around the circumference. They're strong, discreet, and easy to remove.

If your can has handles near the top, you can thread the bag's handles through them before tying a loose knot. This provides anchor points. Finally, a bit of double-sided tape on the outside of the can, just below the rim, can offer that extra bit of grip for the bag's cuff to stick to.

The goal is simple: create enough external friction so the bag's weight doesn't pull it in. With these hacks, changing the bag becomes quick and mess-free.
