* For plastic components (like lids or inner liners), manufacturers may use fire-retardant (FR) plastics. These are polymers treated with additives that inhibit or resist the spread of flame. They are designed to self-extinguish once the ignition source is removed.

* Metal bins can be coated with intumescent paints. When exposed to high heat, these paints swell to form a thick, insulating char layer that protects the underlying material from temperature rise.
