Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

How do I prevent liquids from pooling at the bottom of an outdoor waste bin?

That's a common and messy problem! A soggy bin bottom is a nuisance. Here are some practical, natural ways to tackle it.

First, let's talk about drainage. If your bin doesn't have them, carefully drill a few small holes (about 1/4 inch) in the very bottom of the bin's sides, not the flat center. This allows liquids to drain out. Place the bin on a gravel or slatted surface so the liquid can escape and not create a new puddle underneath.

Absorption is your next best friend. Before you line your bin with a bag, create a dry base. You can use a layer of old newspapers, cardboard, cat litter, or even a handful of dried leaves or yard clippings. These materials will soak up incidental moisture and help keep the bag itself drier.

Be proactive with your trash. Try to drain all liquids from bottles, cans, and food containers before tossing them. For particularly wet kitchen waste, like from fruits or vegetables, consider wrapping it in a newspaper or placing it in a smaller, sealed bag first. This contains the moisture at the source.

Finally, consider the bin's position and your routine. Keep the lid securely closed to keep out rainwater. If possible, store the bin in a shaded area to reduce condensation from temperature swings. And of course, regular cleaning and prompt bag removal are the ultimate defenses against persistent pooling and odors.

A combination of these tips—drainage, absorption, careful disposal, and good habits—will keep your outdoor bin much drier and more manageable.
