Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

How do you prevent liquids from pooling at the bottom of an outdoor waste bin?

That's a great question! A soggy, smelly bin bottom is a common nuisance. Luckily, preventing it is straightforward with a few simple strategies.

First, drainage is key. If your bin doesn't have them, carefully drill several small holes in the very bottom of the interior. This allows liquids to escape. Place your bin on a slatted or elevated stand over a gravel patch to let the drained liquid dissipate naturally.

Second, contain the mess at the source. Always use sturdy, leak-proof trash bags. For extra protection, place a layer of absorbent material at the bag's bottom before you start filling it. You can use old newspapers, cardboard, cat litter, or even commercial bin deodorizer pads. These materials will soak up incidental liquids.

Third, be mindful of what you toss. Try to empty liquids from containers before disposal. For unavoidable wet waste, like food scraps, consider using a separate, smaller compostable bag or container before placing it in the main bin.

Regular maintenance is your final defense. Give your bin a routine rinse and scrub with a mild disinfectant. Let it dry completely in the sun before putting in a new bag. This prevents residue buildup and controls odors.

By combining good drainage, smart lining, careful disposal, and regular cleaning, you can effectively keep your outdoor waste bin dry, clean, and much more pleasant to use.
