Clean the surface first for best adhesion. For a hanging or swinging lid, small bumper stickers or even a strategically placed strip of an old bicycle inner tube can work wonders. Another cause is a lid that's too light, causing it to slam down with force. Adding a bit of weight can slow its closure. You can discreetly attach a small, flat weight to the underside of the lid using strong adhesive or bolts, if possible. Just ensure it doesn't interfere with the lid's swing. For a quick, no-tools fix, try draping a heavy cloth or a small sack of sand over the hinge area on the inside of the lid. Regular maintenance is also key. Ensure the hinges are lubricated with a silicone-based spray (not oil, as it attracts dirt) and check that all bolts are tight, as loose parts can rattle and amplify noise.
