Summer heat can turn your urban trash can into a smelly nightmare. Don't worry, keeping it fresh is easier than you think. First, start with a deep clean. Empty the bin completely and scrub it with a mixture of hot water, dish soap, and a cup of white vinegar or bleach. Rinse thoroughly and let it dry in the sun, which helps kill bacteria. Line your can with a sturdy, scented garbage bag and always tie bags tightly before disposal. Sprinkle a layer of baking soda, cat litter, or even dried coffee grounds at the bottom to absorb liquids and neutralize odors naturally. For ongoing maintenance, place a few charcoal briquettes or silica gel packs in a breathable bag at the bottom—they are excellent odor absorbers. Try to avoid putting overly wet waste directly in the bin; drain liquids from food containers first. If possible, store your trash can in a shaded, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, which accelerates decay. Finally, take the trash out more frequently during hot spells, even if the bin isn't full. A simple weekly wipe-down with a disinfectant spray will make a huge difference.
