Not only is this a nuisance, but it can also pose a risk to customers with allergies. The key to prevention lies in understanding what attracts them and systematically removing those attractions.
Bees and wasps are primarily drawn to sugary liquids, food scraps, and the scents they produce. Therefore, your first line of defense is impeccable sanitation. Empty trash cans multiple times a day, especially during peak business hours. Use heavy-duty, sealed liner bags to contain leaks and odors. Immediately clean up any spills around the bins with a vinegar-water solution, which helps neutralize sugary residues.
Next, invest in the right hardware. Choose trash cans with tight-fitting, locking lids. Consider bins with foot pedals or hands-free openings to minimize gaps. For high-traffic areas, specialized pest-proof bins are worth the investment. Place the bins as far from seating areas as is practical for waste management, but ensure they are still conveniently located for staff use to encourage compliance.
Maintain the bins themselves. Wash them out regularly with soap and water or a mild bleach solution to remove sticky films and odors. Sprinkle a little food-grade diatomaceous earth around the base (not inside) as a natural insect deterrent that is safe for pets and people when used correctly.
