Mosquitoes in urban areas often find perfect breeding grounds in something we use daily: our trash cans. A single neglected bin can produce hundreds of new mosquitoes every week. The key to prevention is understanding that mosquitoes need standing water to lay eggs, and even a small amount of trapped rainwater or liquid waste in your garbage can provides that opportunity.
Start by ensuring all your trash cans have tight-fitting, undamaged lids. This simple step is your first line of defense, preventing rainwater from accumulating inside. Make it a habit to inspect lids regularly for cracks or warping. When placing bags in the bin, avoid overfilling them, which can prevent the lid from closing completely. For bins without liners, give them a thorough rinse with a hose every few weeks to remove sticky residues and old liquids that can collect at the bottom.
