Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

What's the best way to anchor urban trash cans in a windy, high-rise balcony?

Living in a high-rise with a windy balcony can turn taking out the trash into a real chore. There's nothing worse than finding your bin tipped over and garbage scattered everywhere. The good news is, securing it doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. Here are some of the most effective ways to anchor your urban trash cans.

First, consider adding weight to the bin itself. You can place a few heavy bricks or a bag of sand at the bottom, underneath the liner. For a more permanent and neat solution, try creating a concrete base. Simply pour concrete into the bottom of a plastic tub, insert a bolt upright while it's wet, and once it's set, you can drill a corresponding hole in your trash can to screw it securely onto this heavy base.

If drilling isn't an option, use restraints. Heavy-duty bungee cords or cargo straps are fantastic. Loop them around the bin and attach them to sturdy balcony railings, posts, or wall anchors. For a cleaner look, use clear vinyl straps. Another clever trick is to use a weighted liner—a durable, sand-filled bag that sits inside your can, holding both the liner and the contents firmly in place.

Your choice of bin also matters. Opt for a rectangular or square design with a wide, flat base; they are much more stable than round ones. Look for models specifically marketed as "outdoor," "anchored," or "wind-resistant," which often have features like built-in anchor points or a low center of gravity.

Finally, strategic placement is key. Tuck your bin into a corner where two walls meet, or position it behind a windbreak like a large planter, furniture, or a balcony screen. This reduces its direct exposure to gusty winds.

By combining a bit of weight, a simple restraint, and smart placement, you can easily win the battle against the wind and keep your balcony clean and tidy.
