Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

How do I clean and disinfect my outdoor trash cans without damaging them?

Keeping your outdoor trash cans clean is essential for hygiene and controlling odors, but you want to avoid damaging them. Here's a natural, effective method. First, move the empty can to a well-ventilated area, like your driveway. Rinse it thoroughly with a garden hose to remove loose debris. Next, create a cleaning solution using warm water and a mild dish soap or a half-cup of baking soda. Avoid harsh chemicals like bleach or ammonia at this stage, as they can degrade plastic over time. Use a long-handled scrub brush or a dedicated toilet brush to scrub the entire interior and exterior. Pay special attention to the lid and the rim where grime builds up. Rinse completely until the water runs clear. Now, for disinfecting, mix one gallon of water with one cup of white vinegar or a diluted bleach solution (follow product instructions carefully). Spray or wipe this disinfectant all over the can, especially inside. Let it sit for about 10 minutes, then rinse it off thoroughly. Finally, prop the can upside down or on its side to air dry completely in the sun before putting a new bag in. This routine, done monthly, will keep your bins fresh and functional without harming the material.
