Another great method is to anchor your bin. You can use a ground anchor kit, similar to those for bicycles, or get creative by drilling a hole in a concrete pad and using a chain and padlock. If drilling isn't an option, placing the cans in a locked shed or garage is the best defense. For shared alleyways, try chaining multiple bins together – it's much harder to steal several at once. Also, think about placement. Keep bins visible from your house but not easily accessible from the street. Finally, consider a heavier, commercial-grade bin which is less tempting to take.
