Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

How deep does an outdoor trash bin need to be to deter pests?

That's a great question, and one I had to figure out the hard way after some nightly visits from raccoons! From experience and research, the depth itself isn't the primary deterrent; it's the combination of a secure lid and sufficient capacity.

A bin that is too shallow is easily knocked over. A general rule is to look for a bin that is at least 30 to 35 inches (about 76 to 89 cm) in height. This depth provides enough volume for typical household waste and makes the bin heavier and more stable when full, which is a good start. However, a determined raccoon can still tip over a tall, lightweight bin.

The real key is an animal-proof locking lid. Look for bins with latches that raccoons' clever paws cannot easily pry open. Many "pest-proof" or "wildlife-resistant" models feature locking mechanisms that require human hands to operate. The lid should fit tightly with no gaps.

So, focus on these features:

1. Sturdy Construction: Heavy-duty plastic or metal.

2. Secure Lid: Latches, locks, or a design that animals cannot manipulate.

3. Adequate Size/Depth: 30+ inches tall to prevent easy tipping and hold enough weight.

4. Flat, Smooth Sides: Avoid ridges or handles that give pests a climbing foothold.

Finally, always use bungee cords or a weight on top for extra security, and keep the area around the bin clean. No bin is 100% foolproof if there's easily accessible food smell, but a deep, locked bin is your best defense.
