Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Trash Cans

How do I repair a cracked hinge on a metal urban trash can?

Oh, a cracked hinge on a metal trash can is a common headache, but don't worry, it's usually a pretty straightforward fix you can do yourself! First, empty and thoroughly clean the trash can. Let it dry completely. For a small crack, a strong two-part epoxy or metal epoxy putty is your best bet. Clean the hinge area with rubbing alcohol to remove grease. Mix the epoxy as directed and apply it generously over and around the crack, trying to get some into the crack itself. You can use a clamp or strong tape to hold the hinge in the correct position while it cures. Follow the product's curing time—usually 24 hours for full strength. For a larger break or if the hinge is completely detached, you might need to drill small pilot holes on either side of the crack and use small metal screws or bolts with washers to reinforce the repair after epoxying. Once set, your trash can should be as good as new! Regular maintenance, like not overloading the lid, can prevent future cracks.
