That loud BANG every time the trash can lid shuts is enough to make anyone jump. Luckily, you don't have to live with the noise. Here are a few simple, low-cost solutions to quiet things down.
First, try adding cushioning. Self-adhesive weatherstripping foam or a small strip of a pool noodle attached to the underside of the lid where it makes contact can soften the impact significantly. For a stronger hold, use hook-and-loop tape.
If the lid is very heavy and falls fast, you need to slow it down. Attach a soft-close damper, like those used for cabinet doors, inside the can. Alternatively, rig a bungee cord or strong elastic strap from one side of the can's handle, under the lid, to the other handle. This creates tension to gently lower the lid.
Finally, check the hinges. Tightening loose screws or adding a washer as a spacer can sometimes stop the rattling and banging that contributes to the noise. With a few minutes and simple materials, you can enjoy a much quieter trash day.
